The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has said it will mobilise its members to down their tools next month after the government’s failure to employ all trained and qualified teachers in the budget for this year.

Knut Secretary-General Wilson Sossion issued the warning, saying that they had expected the government to allocate at least Sh18 billion for hiring the more than 90,000 trained teachers instead of the Sh2 billion allocated.

“It is foolhardy for the government to train teachers using public money and fail to utilise them,” Sossion said.

He decried the fact that the government talks of its commitment to educating the Kenyan child yet it was unwilling to hire enough teachers.

Sossion revealed that this time round, Knut will mobilise not only its registered members into the strike but will also the public whose children suffer due to the government’s failure to hire enough teachers.

He was speaking at Koibeyon Mixed Day and Boarding Secondary School, Bomet East constituency.
