The Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT has criticized Acting Education Cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i for ignoring teacher’s ideas and making abrupt changes in the education sector.
Mombasa KNUT Secretary Dan Aloo said that the order by Matiang’i that all school buses to be painted yellow color amounted to dictatorship and he should learn to engage teachers.
He said that the Acting Education Cabinet Secretary has been performing his duties without recognizing ideas from important stakeholders in the education sector, a habit that has resulted in problems within the education sector countrywide.
Aloo said that Matiang’i should always learn how to consult and engage teachers whenever he feels that some changes should be implemented in the education sector in the country.
Aloo said that teachers should be allowed the liberty to paint buses any color provided their vehicles are in good condition and road worthy.
“What the Acting Education Cabinet secretary should know is that we have more important ideas as teachers and education stakeholders in the country, we must be consulted and involved before any changes are effected in the education sector,” he said.
Aloo said that forcing school management to paint a fresh their vehicles was adding more expenses to the school management.
“Who is supposed to incur the expenses, our School heads or the parents? The government should incur the charges whenever implementing such shoddy changes” he said.
He accused Matiang’i of trading education affairs as if the ministry was his private property.
Aloo insisted that teachers only needed to work in good conditions of their vehicles and ensure pupils and students travel safely and not painting school buses in yellow colors.
Two days ago, the Interior Cabinet secretary and Acting Education Cabinet secretary ordered that all school buses painted yellow color for easy identification, an order that did not go down well with teachers and education stakeholders in Mombasa.
