Kisumu teachers on Thursday called for full involvement of education stakeholders in the scrapping of 8-4-4 system of education.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kisumu County executive secretary Zablon Awange said both the teachers unions must be incorporated into the process.
Awange said the two unions will be very instrumental in the implementation of the proposed new system of education.
“We don’t want the new system to fail if it is approved, this will only be possible if all the stakeholders especially teachers unions are fully brought on board,” he said.
He said the process should not be hurried but instead thorough research is done on the new system before it is rolled out.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Awange said the current system should not be condemned in totality and proposed hiving off some parts from 8-4-4 to beef up the new system.
He said the new system should be holistic noting that the current system was examinations centred.
“What we have gone through the current system is a situation where schools principals compete for schools grade, students compete for scoring grade A,” he said.
Awange said the union will support the move if the new system will put in place the whole development of a child in school.
