The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has rescinded its week-long strike notice following confirmation from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that the teacher’s annual salary increment is still intact.
Initially, the teachers union granted the Commission one week to restore the annual salary increment, if not the union would go on a nationwide teachers strike.
According to Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion, the union has been guaranteed the annual pay rise after receiving confirmation from the Commission.
“TSC has confirmed to us that the annual increment has been reinstated and we are happy and we have forthwith withdrawn our strike notice because it has been overtaken by events. We also take this opportunity to congratulate the teachers’ employer for giving the issue the due attention it deserved and averting a labour crisis,” Sossion said.
“We have agreed that any other matters will be sorted out between the union and TSC through amicable engagements. We now ask our members to continue with their work and continue supporting the union, but more importantly, cooperate with TSC and the ministry so that this year’s exam is conducted and concluded successfully,” he added.
