Two teachers unions in Kisumu have raised the red flag over what they say is failure by the members of the county assemblies to release bursary funds to schools. Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) have said that ever since the names were submitted to the various wards, the monies have since not been disbursed. Kisumu Knut chairman Edward Olando said the names were submitted for consideration and even the allocation was made. “Our pupils who wanted to be assisted by the bursaries presented names and they were shortlisted and even allocated money. Since then, we have not had the money in the schools nor are we being told what is going on,” Olando said. His Kuppet counterpart, Zablon Awange, said that the allocations were shrouded in mystery. “As compared to the constituency bursary, the names of beneficiaries should be pinned at public noticeboards for all to see,” he said. The unionist said that they would oppose any allocation that has not been fairly done and one where all stakeholders are not involved.
