Teachers across Nyamira county have been called upon to help both the National and county government in the fight against female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and forced early marriage.

According to Nyamira executive for Education and ICT Jones Omwenga, the county government of Nyamira has stepped up to end early marriages, and they believe with the help of teaches they will succeed.

“Teachers can help us easily tell the number of school going dropping from schools and also tell us those who have been married and report the cases immediately,” he added.

He said Gusii region for a while has been known for practicing FGM, adding that it is high time all parents and stakeholders ensured that the primitive act ends.

Omwenga added that for almost two years now, they have rescued over 20 girls who have been forced into marrieage before they even finish their school, and most of the parents have already been charged over the same.

He called upon various religious leaders, politicians and parents to hold hands and boost education of the girl child.

He was speaking when she visited Sironga Girls to congratulate them over their past performance in KCSE on Wednesday evening.
