Retired teachers in Nakuru want any student found guilty of arson attacks in schools jailed for at least five years.
The teachers claimed that the lenient punishment meted by education CS Fred Matiangi , which advocated that no student should be readmitted to another school unless cleared by the County Education Board, will not curb unrests.
“They should even be charged for attempted murder. Supposing some of the students were trapped in the dorms when it caught fire?” posed Margaret Kimani.
Kimani claimed the schools should also be able to understand the psychology of the students.
“We are clearly living in different times and the trends are totally different. They should be able to fit in and look into what the children understand best and work with that,” she added
Emmanuel Muchemi called on teachers to also respect students.
“Teachers should not bark at students. Introducing the cane is not the solution as many have already gotten used to being beaten. In fact teachers should stop instilling fears in them like during our time, when a pupil would see a teacher and even though he wasn’t doing anything, would run away,” he added.
The group of more than fifty teachers were speaking to the press in Shabab on Thursday during a meeting to look into the progress of the case regarding their retirement benefits.
The court has issued an order demanding the government to pay them their dues.
