School teachers have been warned against caning their students.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said that caning is a corporal punishment that has been outlawed in schools and, therefore, no child should be caned for any offense.
Matiang’i said all this in a speech that was read on his behalf by the Director of Adult Education and Continuous Learning, Kinara Nambwari during a prize-giving ceremony for students from Gichugu Constituency in Kirinyaga County.
“Teachers should not discipline pupils and students by caning. Disciplining children by caning is not allowed by the Ministry of Education,” stated Matiang’i in his speech.
The Cabinet Secretary stated that there were various other ways of disciplining children besides caning them, which was simply just inflicting pain on them for minor issues.
“It is wrong to cane learners simply because they have broken school rules and regulations,” said Matiang’i.
