Speaking on Sunday during a church service, Flamingo Ward Member of County Assembly Moses Njiiri said many teachers are fond of drinking too much, to the extent of missing classes.

The MCA noted that though education was not a devolved service in the country, county governments have a right to pass laws that regulate education provision services locally to suit needs and demand of residents.

According to Njiiri, many teachers in Nakuru’s public schools spend most of productive hours consuming alcohol, a fact that compromises their teaching service delivery, and warned that the county government would soon intervene in order to safeguard education standards in the county.

“I have over years noted that our teachers especially in public schools indulge in over drinking. It has become a culture that unfortunately has diversely affected education standards in Nakuru. These teachers must be warned that the county government will soon take action and they risk losing their jobs,’’ said the MCA.

Njiiri noted that Nakuru has over the years registered poor performances, a fact that is partly attributed to lazy teachers and poor management of local schools.

He said the county government and assembly should initiate policies and laws that will safeguard and improve education standards in the region including punishing lazy teachers.
