Head teachers have been warned against forcing students repeat classes in Kisumu County.
The region’s Director of Education, Sylvester Mulambe, said that action would be taken against teachers who engage in such.
Mulambe said that forcing learners to repeat classes was contrary to the Basic Education Act 2013.
“The government’s policy stipulates that no child should be made to repeat a class irrespective of their performance because this imparts negatively on retention and completion rates and quality Education,” Mulambe said in a Press briefing in his office.
The education director was responding to claims of parents who raised concern about some schools that were forcing learners to repeat against their will.
He however, said the Basic Education Act, 2013 has sufficient evidence that shows that repetition does not enhance performance and it in fact has a negative impact on quality education.
“This should not be happening unless it is the wish of the child to repeat a particular class,” he said.
The Act further states that the longer the children are kept in school, the poorer their performance becomes.
