Tears flowed at the Nakuru County hospital as survivors of the fatal Migaa accident recounted what transpired.
The accident killed 38 people at Migaa along the Salgaa blackspot on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway on Sunday morning December 31.
Phoebe Achieng saw death with her eyes and the Sunday will remain one of the darkest days as she lost five family members.
“I’m lost for words. What did I do to deserve this? Where did I go wrong?,” Achieng said, tears flowing down her cheeks.
Achieng lost all her four sons, including a 2-month-old and a 2-year-old, and her husband.
“We boarded the ill-fated bus four hours before it left the Kisumu stage. It took time to get full but we finally left at around 11.30 pm. After an hour, the driver started speeding.
On reaching total petrol station, few kilometers to the black spot, traffic police stopped the bus. The driver alighted and embarked after about two minutes. He seemed to have ‘sorted the police’” Achieng said.
It is after passing the road block that being in the bus became a nightmare.
"He was driving so bad and seemed something was wrong. Passengers who were awake shouted at the driver but he ignored. Before the accident, he had missed hitting other vehicles. It was a total nightmare before we crashed (into the trailer)," another survivor said.
