Telkom women’s hockey team are confident of sealing a sixth straight African Cup for Club Championships when the event begins in Accra, Ghana on Saturday.
Nine-time winners Telkom left the country yesterday ahead of the showpiece with head coach Jos Openda, who has been with the team since 1989, expressing his optimism that they will conquer the continent at the Theodosia Okoe Stadium in what will be the 30th edition of the event.
“We continue to conquer the Kenyan and African pitches because of Telkom’s unwavering support. We are energized and look forward to another opportunity to successfully defend our continental title in Accra,” said Openda on Tuesday during the team’s send-off.
During the event, the team’s financiers Telkom also announced a Sh12 million sponsorship renewal covering allowances, kit requirements and training needs throughout the year.
“The long-standing relationship is borne out of a passion for the sport as well as the stellar performance of the team. We are excited about this team that remains the pride of Kenya on the African hockey stage.
Over the years, it has continued to grow, withstanding the test of time and competition both locally and in Africa,” said Telkom CEO Also Mareuse during the cheque presentation ceremony at City Park Stadium.
This comes after the team claimed the league title for the 20th year in a row, having been dominant yet again in the just-concluded season.
Telkom, which boats 11 of the 20 players in the national women’s hockey team, has had no equal both in Kenya and Africa for over 10 years and are favorites to triumph in Accra having started early preparations for the continental event.
