The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Saturday night mounted an operation targeting non-compliant vehicles and drunk drivers on various roads within Eldoret town.NTSA officials conducted alcoblow tests to drivers with those who passed allowed to proceed with the journey while the unlucky ones were taken into this a waiting car. The crackdown saw more than 10 drivers arrested for being drunk.Passengers on the vehicles whose drivers were arrested were forced to cut short their journey with a traffic police officer temporarily assuming the role of a conductor in one of the vehicles heading to Langas estate as he ensured travelers were refunded their fare.North Rift NTSA manager Mohamed Hamsin who was in charge of the operations expressed concerns that matatu drivers could drive under the influence of the alcohol while carrying passengers."Driving while drunk is one of the causes of accidents on our roads and we are always working hard to ensure road users are safe and free from reckless drivers," Hamsin told the press in Eldoret on Sunday."We will keep conducting these impromptu crackdowns on our roads across the region as this is the only way we can ensure strict adherence to traffic laws and regulations," he added.
