The laws of the county state that no bar should be less than 300 meters from schools, hospitals and churches that are within its vicinity.

Alcoholic Drinks Control Board county director Armstrong Rono said that the county has to protect children and hence its decision to shut down any bar that was flouting the laws stating that some bars operated just outside school fences.

Some of the pubs shut down in the operation include those in Munyaka and Kapsoya estates in Eldoret. In the same light more than ten people were taken in by police for going against the law and operating outside the hours stipulated.

“It has stopped being business as usual for us, we aim at eradicating this menace to the best of our capability, we cannot risk it destroying the future of our upcoming generation,” said Mr Rono.

He further added that the county is carrying out a program aimed at educating members on the perils of alcohol.

In the same county last year more than 50 people including students died after taking illicit alcohol in parts of Eldoret town.
