Tenants of rental quarters in Makao estate in Nakuru East sustained injuries and lost property when they were forcefully evicted following a dispute by relatives over the ownership of the commercial property the rental houses are built on. One of the victims, Samuel Ongaki, said trouble had started a few weeks ago after the tenant received a notification from one of the wrangling parties’ lawyer asking them to vacate the houses since they were now under new management and needed to be renovated. However, according to the tenant, the other party that had been collecting rent from them likewise gave out a notification through his lawyers challenging the previous claims while urging the tenants to remain put and continue paying rent to him. “Two people came here and told us that we should leave before noon the following day. We assumed the threats as normal as we had been made to believe over time. But at around 9am a caterpillar track came and started pulling down the wall around the plot and roofing of the houses,” said Ongaki. He added: “We pleaded with them to allow us salvage our household property but only gave us 30 minutes. Some people had gone to work and the exercise has really affected them.’’ A single mother of two, Jane Njeri, said the incident had adversely affected her since she had no immediate plans of shifting from the plot where she pays Sh 1500 per month. “I am stranded. I don’t know where I will get accommodation that I can afford immediately. I was not expecting this to happen so soon, ‘’ lamented the vegetables’ vendor.
