In a letter through the county secretary and head of public service Martin Njogu, Waititu notes he sacked Mugwe for allegedly failing to deliver on his responsibilities and for not being a good team player.

"I have observed that you are not keen on delivering your responsibilities, nor is your immediate focus the delivery of service to the residents of Kiambu County. You are also not a good team player, which is affecting the overall performance of your responsibilities and that of the county government as a whole," states the document dated May 8, 2018.

Mugwe, who most Kiambu residents regard as the 'most hardworking CEC', had prior to his sacking been sent on a 30-day suspension for what the county boss termed as overuse of social media platforms.

"If your work is taking pictures and posting them on Facebook and WhatsApp, then we shall not allow that. I shall have a meeting with you after the expiry of your leave to agree on your performance and set targets," the suspension letter read in part.

Mugwe who is a trained space engineer previously served as the CEC for Roads, Transport, Public Works and Utilities before he was transferred to the water docket.

The embattled Minister took to his Facebook timeline to announce his sacking, causing outrage among his supporters with some calling for demonstrations to condemn Waititu's move.

"Yours truly John Mugwe has been relieved of his duties even before the leave is over," he posted yesterday.

"The fight begins. It will work better for you being outside than inside. Let the revolution save Kiambu begins with you," Gathengi Moses told Mugwe.

The firing of Mugwe comes in despite his cordial relationship with Waititu during the campaign period, Mugwe was at the forefront led by Waititu's deputy James Nyoro to ensure the former governor William Kabogo is sent home.

Mugwe even shelved his ambitions to be Kiambu governor to back Waititu for the seat. He was part of the group that formed a movement dubbed United for Kiambu, which eventually trounced Kabogo.
