Tension remains high in Kom area, Isiolo County following the influx of herders from neighboring counties.
Livestock herders from Garissa, Marsabit and Mandera counties have invaded the reserved grazing lands of Kom and Baasa with sophisticated firearms, creating conflict of interest over the scarce resources.
Thousands of livestock belonging to the Borana, Somali and Rendille communities are now grazing in the contested area which is likely to dry up in the next one month.
However, a security meeting that was organized by the Northern Range land Trust (NRT) and the Finn Church Aid on Tuesday urged local leaders to spearhead peace initiatives and dilute the rising tension.
The meeting was attended by community leaders, state security teams, livestock herders and community elders from the counties.
In the meeting, Garissa herders were also ordered to immediately vacate Nyachis area in Kom town, an area that has been deserted for the last two years following killings of residents in conflicts over water and pasture.
Chari MCA Galgalo Ali said herders from neighboring counties have failed to follow the proper procedures set up by the grazing committees thus sparking renewed tensions.
