Tension remains high in Kibera following an incident where the police fired live bullets on protesting youth.
The incident happened on Monday just after Cord protests along the University Way emerged after the slum-based youths turned their anger on a local railway line sparking collision with patrol police in the area.
According to a news statement from Peter Katam, the Kilimani OCPD, about 200 violent youths from Kibera slums diverted their energies to a railway line with intentions of removing it and also looting from local residents, a fact that triggered the police to forcefully restore the situation.
Katam noted that the responsible police force could not watch as the irresponsible youth vandalised public property. One person was injured by a bullet fired by the police and has since been rushed to the hospital.
The Monday demonstrations by the Cord opposition led to the destruction of property, body injuries and closure of businesses. From photos circulating in social media platforms, the police are on record using excessive force to restore normalcy on the city streets.
But the Cord opposition has remained adamant that the protests will continue as scheduled regardless of police brutality.
