Tension is high in Migingo after Ugandan security officers arrested a Kenyan Administration Police officer deployed at the island.

The AP officer attached to the Border Patrol Unit according to sources was arrested at 3pm.

It was still unclear why the officer was arrested by the time this writer spoke to an executive member of the Migingo Beach Management Unit on phone on Sunday.

"The AP officer was on patrol when he was arrested," the source said.

"Up to now we do not know why he was arrested. They told us that they want to chase away all Kenyans from the island."

There has been tension at the island for the past one week after Ugandan police officers at the island arrested Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials who had gone there to register Kenyan fishermen as voters.

The Ugandan officers also confiscated the BVR machine in their possession, Migingo Beach Management Unit Chairman John Obunge told this writer on phone then.

The voter registration however, resumed on Wednesday before being suspended again following opposition from the Ugandans the exercise be halted.

The source said on Saturday, another AP officer was arrested and detained shortly before being released.

Both Kenya and Uganda claim ownership of the rocky island.

On Wednesday, MPs from Nyanza at a press conference in Parliament told government to resolve the island's ownership issue.

Attempts by this writer to get comment from Uganda Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga were unsuccessful as phone calls made to him went unanswered.
