The term of a special committee investigating arson attacks in schools has been extended by education CS Fred Matiang'i.
The team will now have six more weeks to conduct its investigations following a meeting with the CS at Jogoo House, Nairobi.
“The team led by career administrator Clare Omollo said it needed more time to analyze the data it had collected since it was appointed in July,” said Matiang'i.
Matiangi and Interior Ministry counterpart Joseph Nkaissery had said the report should clearly outline measures to reduce cases of unrest when it is released.
Findings from the investigations will be able to identify individuals behind the arson attack cases and recommend measures to curb future similar happenings.
The committee was expected to probe all cases of school fires during the second term of 2016 as well as review recommendations of previous task forces on school unrest.
The team is also supposed to audit existing school safety and security regulations and make recommendations on strict measures to maintain a high standard of discipline.
The committee members include the Secretary of Administration in the Office of the President Claire Omolo, Assistant Inspector General of Police Lillian Muli, Assistant Inspector General Directorate of Criminal Investigations Patrick Mugo and Senior Assistant Director in the Education Ministry Charles Khanyira. James Kairu Senior Assistant Director in the Education Ministry, Teachers Service Commission Senior Deputy Director Loise Nyaseda and Gracie MK. Mullei an Educationist are also members of the committee.
