Mohammed Suleiman Swaleh, was arraigned before the court to answer to charges of allegedly being a member of the terror group, al-Shabaab.

The accused was arrested by Anti-Terror Police Unit officers on September 3, 2016 at Mshomoroni in Mombasa County, following a tip-off from members of the public.

State Counsel Wangari Mwaura told the court that the accused is believed to be an al-Shabaab member and is suspected to be working on the ground to recruit youth to join the militia group in Mshomoroni and its environs.

Mwaura further told the court that investigations into the matter are wide and complex, hence the need to allocate the officers more time.

In the application to have the suspect detained, the prosecution said Mr Swaleh is said to have links to the militia group and has information that may assist police in their investigations.

She added that the electronic gadgets including a mobile phone that were recovered in the accused’s possession during his arrest, need to be taken to the Cyber-crime unit for analysis.

The prosecution told Mombasa Principal Magistrate Francis Kyambia that compact discs also found in his possession have been taken to Nairobi for forensic analysis.

Magistrate Kyambia in his ruling gave the investigating officers 10 days to complete their investigations and ordered for the accused to be detained at Nyali Police Station.

The case will be mentioned on September 15.
