Police killed a suspected terrorist on Friday in Merti, Isiolo County and recovered a cache of weapons.
Isiolo DCI boss Raphael Barasa who confirmed the incident said they managed to arrest two others Abdimajit Hassan, 24, and Nane Keynan, 23, during the operation.
Mr. Barasa said they recovered more than 1,000 bullets, 36 grenades, 18 Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and five AK-47 rifles from the suspected terrorists.
The DCI boss said police were on a security patrol in Yamicha in Merti Town when they spotted a vehicle hidden raising their suspicions that it could have been dumped by Al-Shabaab terrorists.
He said the officers were approaching the vehicle when the Al-Shabaab suspects shot at the officers, prompting them to retaliate and one suspect was killed.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Mr. Barasa said the weapons were recovered from the suspects' vehicle which was hidden in a thicket.
There were also assortments of knives in the vehicle that the terrorists planned to use in their attacks.
Mr. Barasa said two others managed to escape during the operation adding that investigation into the incident has been launched.
“One of the suspects alighted from the vehicle that was hidden in a thicket and engaged the officers in a fierce gun battle. Our officers opened fire and killed him instantly.”
“We have arrested two of the suspected Al-Shabaab militants but two others managed to escape and are still at large. We are pursuing the two suspects who escaped,” said Mr. Barasa.
