An al-Shabaab suspect has been killed following an attack on a police camp in Lamu County.
Confirming the Thursday incident, Lamu East AP commander Abdullahi Adan, said a group of about 20 suspected al-Shabaab militants, attacked Mangai RDU Camp at around 2am.
The AP commander said the militants who were armed with rocket propelled grenades, tried to gain entry into the camp by shooting randomly.
According to the Nation, the gunmen escaped with gunshot wounds after being overpowered by security officers including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), General Service Unit (GSU) and Border Patrol Police Unit who were manning the area.
“At around 2am, our RDU camp at Mangai was attacked by a group of over 20 al-Shabaab militants. We managed to neutralize one militant,” said Adan.
Adan has called on residents to report any person who might have gunshot wounds to the police, adding that they are expecting more reinforcement from Nairobi.
Police recovered an AK-47 rifle and three magazines full of ammunition.
Last Sunday, the militants attacked GSU officers a few kilometres from Baure military camp in Lamu, but no officers were injured during the incident.
This comes even after the government launched the Linda Boni operation in Lamu on September 11, 2015, after reports indicated the forest was an al-Shabaab hideout.
