Religious leaders have been the latest fraternity to come to the rescue of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Africa Center for Open Governance (AfriCog) following their recent deregistration.

Speaking in a press conference in Nairobi Tuesday, the clergy led by Anglican Church of Kenya Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit condemned the move taken by the NGOs Co-ordination Board saying that it's wrong political timing is set to raise eyebrows.

''The timing is wrong with regards to the closure of the firms' operations as the nation is still fresh from the just concluded polls. We call upon the involved bodies to address the issue in a more sober manner to prevent further collisions,'' said Sapit.

The bodies have been accused of operating illegal bank accounts, operating contrary to the NGOs Co-ordination act and fund misappropriation by the NGO Coordination Board, allegations which they have since rubbished.

''We have done nothing wrong and if the board has any evidence against us they are free to have us arrested,'' said Maina Kiai,a board member of the KHRC in a  joint press conference bringing together the two NGOs Tuesday.

The bodies have attributed their woes to political witch hunt claiming that the government is out to frustrate anybody seemingly allied to the opposition block.
