A distance of about 15 kilometres west of Nandi Hills through a murram road is Sheu Morobi cliff.
The cliff is between two hills of Kapsimotwo hills, part of Nandi escarpment in Chematich village. The overhanging cliff is the deepest in the area and the most feared as it is a cliff of death.
In the ancient days, the elderly people of Nandi tribe used to jump off the cliff to die. Anyone who slips or jumps off the 400-meter cliff crashes to death.
According to the elders of the community who spoke with a local television station, the old people and those with chronic diseases used to commit suicide at the cliff in order to relieve their families from the burden of caring them.
"It was considered an honourable and heroic act when the elderly jump off to the cliff as he/she would have mustered the courage to die in order to save their families from the burden of caring them," said Tanui, a resident of the area.
People who the community believed had lived for long enough and were no longer productive were hurled down the cliff to die. Thieves and the sick persons were not spared too. Special rituals were performed before they were plunged into the cliff. Rituals, according to the elders, kept away the spirits of the dead from descending on the community.
"The few elders who chose to die a natural death were considered cowards and outcast as the community feared that they would curse their descendants if they are neglected," said Peter Ng'etich, a tourist guide in the area.
Sheu Morobi is still feared to date by the locals as it is believed that there are lurking spirits of those who committed suicide there.
