November 21, 2013, is the day that put Uasin Gishu County into the limelight across not only the country but also globally, not for a good reason though.
This is the day Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno kicked out top British High Commissioner officials from an Eldoret hotel where they were scheduled to hold a meeting with Non-Governmental Organization from the North Rift region.
The incident came at a time the International Criminal Court (ICC) was a sensitive issue given the fact that six Kenyans were facing criminal charges at the Hague-based court in relation to the 2007 Post Election Violence (PEV).
Deputy President William Ruto was among those facing the charges for his role in the skirmishes in his Rift Valley backyard, more specifically Uasin Gishu County.
The nation had just come from a hotly contested presidential election where the ICC matter had brought together Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta, both of whom were in the same pot at the ICC.
With claims of witnesses coaching taking a center stage in the 2013 campaigns, the presence of foreigners in a hotel in Eldoret would automatically raise eye-brows that 'they seeking new evidence in the cases'.
On this particular day, Chemno accused the UK diplomats of breaching protocol for visiting the county without notifying them. He said the meeting had raised suspicion as it was organized secretively.
The Deputy Governor had stormed a meeting where three top diplomats were to meet with Non-governmental officials at Sirikwa hotel and ordered them out.
“How can you come here without having the courtesy of notifying the county government of your presence and purpose of your visit as diplomatic protocol demands,” asked Chemno as quoted by BBC.
The diplomats would however later meet the Deputy Governor, County Assembly Members (MCA's) and the civil society groups in separate meetings.
