December 16, 2016, will always be a day to remember for Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu.
It is on this day that the former Lands Cabinet Secretary (CS) escaped death by a whisker in an ugly incident that claimed the life of her colleague and former Kitui Mayor Martha Mwangangi.
The late Mwangangi was ran over by a fire engine belonging to the Kitui County Government as she, alongside Ngilu tried to calm down traders who were protesting over the demolition of their kiosks in Kitui town.
As police investigations stated by then, the driver of the fire engine was using it to scare away the protestors that were threatening to torch a vehicle belonging to the county government.
The engine's driver, however, lost its control and ran over the former Mayor killing her on the spot.
Governor Ngilu who was close to the deceased was shoved away by her security, surviving death narrowly.
The horrifying incident shocked many people with locals protesting demanding justice for the deceased.
Days later, Ngilu narrated on how she almost died.
She eulogized her friend, stating that both of them were agitating for interests of the common 'mwananchi' when the deceased met her death.
Ngilu alleged that the incident had been planned by her political competitors who allegedly wanted her out their way as campaigns for 2017 general election geared up.
