Kenyan's national team Harambee stars are not playing in this year 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia but are preparing to face Africa's football powerhouse Ghana on September 7,2018 for AFCON 2019 match qualifications.
Ghana remains the only team in Africa to have ever beaten Harambee Stars 13-2 at home in a match that was attended by President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
And it was on Saturday December 11,1965 to mark Kenya's first ever Jamhuri Day celebrations just a year after Kenya gained independence.
The Black Stars as popularly known had been invited to play a two friendly match with Kenya.
The match was played at Jamhuri Park Stadium.
Kenya is said to have had various challenges heading into the match after their coach Peter Orange failed to show up as the team assembled themselves at Nairobi Railway club.
The Football Association of Kenya now Football Kenya Federation (FKF) sort the services of Ray Bachelor who was the Rift Valley Provincial Sports Officer but couldn't help save the team as he was only with them for four hours.
James Siang'a who replaced Joseph Were in goal when Kenya was 8-1 down while speaking to Daily Nation Sports said;
“I didn’t start. Joseph Were did. I can tell you for a fact that we were no match for the Ghanaians. They had not broken camp since winning the Nations Cup and as such were totally cohesive. In contrast, our team had hardly been together before the game. They were simply too fast, too strong and too good for us in all aspects.”
The Kenya team was represented by: Joseph Were, Tom Sabuni, Jonathan Niva, Anthony Mukabwa, Moses Wabwai, Joseph Okeyo, John Rabuongi, Nicodemus Arudhi, William Chege Ouma, James Asibwa and Moses Ambani.
