The popularity of the flamboyant former county boss was put to test during the Jubilee primaries in April 2017, when he lost the party's ticket to his political rival, Ferdinand Waititu.Kabogo decried foul play and demanded a repeat of the exercise, arguing that the previous one was marred by irregularities.Minutes after Kabogo lost the lucrative ticket, curious Kenyans, especially from Kiambu, took to social media to argue the circumstances that might have led to the trouncing of the flamboyant politician. Many of his immediate supporters were of the view that the disparaging comments the Governor is accused to have made against Kiambu women on January 24, 2017, might have cost him politically. A Limuru resident identified as Grace Wanjiru was quoted by PulseLive saying: “I gave my vote to Waititu because Kabogo insulted us, telling us that he was giving us money to buy inner-wear. He also tells poor residents that when given rice, they view the person who has given them the rice as their ‘god’. This is arrogance and we are fed up." Sensing that the remarks might jeopardise his gubernatorial bid, the vocal politician is reported to have organised a meeting, where he knelt before Kiambu women and pleaded for forgiveness.Kabogo vied as an independent candidate in the August 8 elections but lost to Waitutu after garnering 69,916 votes against Waititu’s 358,604.
