The former Vice President served as Education Minister under retired President Daniel Arap Moi’s regime in 1998.

It was during Kalonzo’s tenure as Education Minister that the country experienced long teachers strike.

The teachers were demanding the government to improve their salaries and welfare.

The tutors across the country under the Kenya National Teachers Union (KNUT) held a strike in demand for their rights.

The strike lasted over a month as the KANU government showed no sign of engaging with the teachers.

On October 6, 1998, Kalonzo as the Minister found himself in trouble when hundreds of teachers surrounded his office at Jogoo House.

The teachers invaded the office and vowed not to leave until they were addressed by Kalonzo.

Holed up in his office and afraid of coming out, Kalonzo called his wife Pauline Musyoka and narrated his ordeal.

To ensure Kalonzo did not escape, the teachers inspected every vehicle that entered and left Jogoo House promises in search of Kalonzo.

"I called my wife (Pauline) telling her that I will sleep in the office as these people (teachers) were looking for the Minister with a ‘Baby’ face,” Kalonzo told the Nation.

Kalonzo says that her wife came to his rescue and managed to get him outside the Jogoo House her car under police escort.

“She asked me to sit in the back seat and have my official car follow us at a distance,” he added.

The 1998 teachers strike was later called off after an agreement between the Moi government and the teachers.
