As Kenyans mourn second liberation hero, Kenneth Matiba who died at Karen hospital on Sunday, here are some facts about the veteran politician you did not know:
The late Kenneth Matiba was a victim of the Nyayo Regime due to his push for multiparty. He was apprehended without trials at the Kamiti Maximum Prison where he severed a stroke after refusing to take his medication.
He was later released after Multiparty was instituted but his health has deteriorated since then.
In 1997, the late burnt his voter’s card and boycotted the general election claiming that the elections lacked democracy.
Nevertheless, he re-registered as a voter in 2008.
Matiba became a permanent secretary of education even before Kenya got independence and later in 1964 became a permanent secretary of commerce under former president Kibaki. Who later became his long-term political rival.
In 1992 presidential election, he became the second after Moi and placed in the seventh place in 2007 general election.
He also served as the chairman of the Kenyan Football federation, Minister of Transport and Communications, Minister of health and Minister of Culture and Social Services.
The multiparty champion started The People Newspaper in 1992 which was published on a weekly basis up to 1998 where it became a daily Newspaper.
