In September that year, Legio Maria Cardinal Samson Arogo claimed that his pope had eloped with three women. But in a quick rejoinder, Pope Ongombe strongly denied the allegations.

“I have moved up the ranks from a padre, to bishop then cardinal, and now I am the pope. Everyone knows that I never engaged in such conducts. I am a pope installed by God,” Pope Ong’ombe was quoted by the Standard.

Legio Maria Church has its headquarters at Got Kwer in Migori County.

According to the Pope, the women he allegedly eloped with were taken to Got Kwer by God as well-wishers to help the church finish constructing the tomb of the sect’s founder, Messiah Melkio Ondeto, who died over 25 years ago.

“To those peddling such propaganda, be assured that I will not tolerate idle talk next time. You will face God, not me,” he warned.

Legio Maria was formed in 1961 and the Church is popular in most Luo Nyanza Counties.

It has between 3.5 to 4 million members in Kenya. The Church is headed by a Pope, with over 100 Bishops, over 10 Cardinals and over 450 priests operating below him.
