December 6, 2003, will always be a day for former Gichugu MP Martha Karua to remember.
Karua survived death narrowly after armed gunmen carjacked and robbed her of valuables.
According to police reports by then, Karua alongside Catholic priest Father Dominic Wamugunda were waiting for the gate to be opened to enter into Wamugunda’s compound in Kabete at around 10 PM when five gunmen pounced on them.
The gunmen robbed Karua who was the Water and Natural Resources Minister of her phone, Sh 13,000 and earrings.
The gunmen also took father Wamugunda’s phone and other valuables.
“They were waiting for the gate to be opened, that is when they were confronted by the carjackers,” Jesse Mituki, the then police spokesperson told journalists as quoted then by the Standard Newspaper.
Karua and Wamugunda who were not hurt in the abduction were found dumped in Waithaka.
The carjacking and abduction incident created elicited heated debates with questions on what the former Minister was doing with the priest at night.
It was also questioned where Karua’s bodyguards and security aid were when the abduction took place.
Karua, however, dismissed the queries, saying that she had no obligation to explain to why she was in the priest’s car and why her bodyguards were not around when the carjacking and abduction took place.
