Retired President Daniel Arap Moi contemplated resigning as Jomo Kenyatta’s deputy in early 70s, recalls journalist Kamau Ngotho in his Memories from the Beat.
One time, he recalls, Moi’s motorcade was flagged down by a powerful Rift Valley Police boss James Mungai, who would later on order search in his Nakuru private home.
Infuriated by the incident, Kamau says, Moi had to reach Central Provincial Commissioner Simon Nyachae, who advised him against resigning.
“At this rate, these people will kill me. They do not even have respect for my position,” Moi had reportedly told Nyachae.
Nyachae in response said: “you are in the middle of the bridge and going back will not be the solution. As long as Kenyatta has no issues with you, just remain confident and calm.”
Moi was battling strong forces from Central Kenya who were determined to repeal the section of the constitution that allowed him to automatically take over from Kenyatta in the event of death.
