The man, dressed in grey shorts, a white T-shirt, and slippers, whipped Odinga and Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya before he was restrained by a private security personnel who later handed him over to the police.

The two and other leaders were enjoying the coastal 'sengenya' dance with the traditional dancers.

While confirming the arrest of the man, Kinango Administration Police Commandant Peter Musyoka said that the man was insane and that they had released him.

"We have released the man because we have established that he is insane," said Mr. Musyoka.

And explaining the incident during a rally in Ukunda the day after, Mvurya said that the man was dancing between him and the late Senator Juma Boy before he turned at him and Odinga.

"He was dancing between Mr Boy and myself and all of a sudden he charged at us (Raila and Mvurya) with a cane to attack us but he was restrained and arrested," said Mvurya.

Mr Mvurya further claimed that the man had wanted to attack the then Mombasa County, Senator Hassan Omar.

"It is propaganda where some say there was intolerance in the referendum campaigns here in Coast. I'm not injured. The man wanted to attack Omar before he was restrained," said Mvurya.

The incident was however downplayed by the late senator Juma Boy Juma, saying that the man was dancing before he lost his balance and fell down.
