It is not easy for men to cry more so the African men who are brought up being taught that a real man never sheds a tear. It is even more awkward when a man, a public figure breaks down and weeps uncontrollably in the public.
This was the case for Deputy President William Ruto in 2013 after the 4th March general elections. During a thanksgiving ceremony at Reverend Teresa Wairimu's Faith ministries, Ruto could not hold back his tears of joy after being declared the winners of the 2013 elections alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Ruto who was accompanied by his wife Rachael to the podium would be given the microphone to address the congregation but would instead lose composure and break down into tears. His wife who had been attempting to comfort him all along also got carried away at some point as well and also cried with him. Reverend Teresa Wairimu had to give them some time to regain composure before he could address the congregation.
"I have not cried like this for many years. The only time I remember crying like this was when I was a little boy and my mother is here to attest to that," said Ruto.
In the much contested for presidential elections, Ruto could not believe how gracious God had been to him and that indeed they had emerged victorious.
During the prayer and worship session, Ruto cried all though not seeming to care about his status. This would later earn him the title of a "crybaby".
