Butcheries are establishments that should be clean and spotless so that houseflies do not land on the meat and also for health hygienic reasons.
At times, in some areas where meat is sold the hygienic standards are not up to standard. Poor hygienic cases have been noticed in some Kibera butcheries whereby meat is left open and houseflies fall on it, something that may lead to a disease outbreak. The meat at times becomes dirty because dirty soil is blown on it by moving wind, flies and this makes meat unsafe for consumption. Butchers should look for ways to cover meat to prevent it from direct reach by dust and flies. At Laini Saba area in Kibera, most butcheries do not meet the required hygienic standards to operate.
''The butchery is open from 8 am in the morning to 11 pm at night. Even though the hygienic requirements are not met by the attendants am forced to buy meat at least 2 to 3 times in a week to change the meal. I cannot eat vegetables the whole week, sometimes it is good to change the meal. I am urging the butchery attendants to try and improve the cleanliness of butchery,'' said Christine Wekesa, a resident at Laini Saba.
The residents have urged the butchers to try and up their game when it comes to selling meat. They should at least, cover it so that there are less dirty things in contact with it.
