People living with disabilities (PWDs) in Thika West Sub County have urged the county government of Kiambu to increase the budgetary allocation to assist them improve their livelihoods.
Speaking on Sunday during a church ceremony at Joy Town School for the disabled in Thika, disabled spokesperson Joyce Maina said that the number of disabled in the region is increasing daily and thus there is need to channel more funds to help them.
‘The Sh3.5 million that was set aside for disabled persons in Kiambu County alone is minimal and cannot cater for the large number of increasing disabled in this area,’ she lamented.
Maina urged the county government to conduct a census in order to establish the actual number of disabled so that they can all be served accordingly without leaving others out.
“Parents and guardians who are living with disabled should not hide them in their homes but should instead register with national council for population and development for them to get benefits awarded to them by the government,” she said.
She urged members of the public to treat the physically challenged as normal beings and avoid harassing them.
Maina regretted that he has raised many issues concerning disabled persons to the relevant bodies but so far none had bore any fruit.
She urged the county government to help the PWDs establish a rehabilitation centre at their two acre farm in Makongeni that will cater for disabled persons within the county.
