Rugby has been by far one of the oldest sporting events in the country having been introduced by the colonialists during their early settlement processes.
Despite its omnipresence in the country as early as before the First World war, it took Kenyan nationals a lot of time before being integrated in the sides playing the elite sporting activity.
The first Black Kenyan to be selected to play rugby was Ted Kabetu.
He was selected in 1972 and was to turn out for East Africa Tuskers which was composed of players from all of Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
They played a match against South African club called Richmond RFC with Kabetu playing an important role in the match.
His appearance pretty much set the trend for the subsequent influx of indigenous players into the team and an improvement in the game.
The teams played with more pride whenever Africans were selected in majority and one notable performance was when Tuskers nearly beat the Harlequins that were touring the country from the UK before narrowly losing out by 20-15.
Kenya has gone on to become World Conquerors and has been ranked among the best 15 sides in the world for a long time now due to its consistency in performance.
Kenya is also considered for all the 8 competitions in world rugby series.
