The former Kenya international midfielder was playing for Italian club Internazionale.

The towering midfielder was introduced in the 82nd minute to replace the red-hot Wesley Sneijder in their match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in London.

Inter won the match 1-0 against the blues thanks to Samuel Etoo's lone goal that was scrambled into the net after poor goalkeeping by Chelsea keeper Ross Turnbull.

Mariga went on to make further history with Inter when he was named on the substitutes bench in the Final of the Champions League against German giants Bayern Munchen.

He received the winner's medal of the champions league, the only Kenyan to have done that.

It would take another two years after his glory with Inter for another African to win the accolade.

His failed move to Manchester City the previous transfer window had denied him the opportunity of grazing our screens in the Cityzen's colours.

The failure by English Foreign Authorities to grant him a work permit was however a route to his superstardom as Jose Mourinho snapped him up and turned him into a winning machine while playing for the winning team.

His brother Victor Wanyama who turns out for London club Tottenham Hotspurs holds the record of being the first Kenyan to play and score in the English Premier League.
