Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries PS nominee Harry Kimtai on Monday pledged to work closely with MPs and other stakeholders to ensure the implementation of President Kenyatta’s key development agenda.
While appearing before the National Assembly Agricultural committee, Kimtai called for the support from the House team and the parliament as whole to ensure the smooth running of the state department which he hopes to take charge of once approved.
“ Achieving the Big Four Agenda requires the input f everyone including the Legislature and the Executive. If appointed PS, I will work closely with parliamentarians to see that we come up with legislative frameworks that will conform to the President’s agenda,” said Kimtai.
His experience was however put to task by MP’s Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo) and Simba Arati(Dagoretti North) as they questioned the relationship between his economics background and the knowledge required to run the state department.
“Do you think with your background in economics, sending you to head the Livestock Department as a PS will be a career mismatch?” questioned Mr.Wagwe.
However, Kimtai who is a Master’s Degree holder in Economics was quick to point out that livestock production itself is an economic activity and expressed optimism that by joining hands with all the stakeholders he will improve the livestock sector and bring benefit to farmers while spurring economic growth.
Kimtai who contested and lost the Mt. Elgon parliamentary seat is the first member of the minority Sabaot community to be appointed to such a post since independence and his appointment is lauded as historic.
