Bungoma county senator, Moses Wetangula, once declared that he was to vie for the top seat. This was during the grand coalition government when the ambitious leader made it public that he would vie for the presidency.
Serving as a Foreign Affairs Minister by then, Wetangula stood up in support of the late George Saitoti's ambition of vying for the presidency in 2012. Though in a comic and hilarious tone, Moses Wetangula never displayed any sign of joking - it was serious.
"I have no problem with Saitoti. Being a Democrat, I can't panic. I will challenge him for the top seat. Let him lay his groundwork well and I will do mine and we meet at the ballot!" Wetangula said.
Wetangula's declaration that he was to be on the ballot in 2012 came after the Internal Security Minister at that time - the late George Saitoti had also declared his interest.
Notably, these declarations stirred up the former President Mwai Kibaki's succession debate.
Unfortunately, Mr Saitoti died before the competitive polls and Wetangula never vied for the presidency.
