Several slums have continuously faced challenges of accessing good clean water or even proper drainage systems and as a result outbreaks of water-borne diseases are evidently becoming rampant.

Human waste disposal has proved to be a bigger challenge to the slum residents.

The widespread congestion of residential houses in these areas makes it difficult for households to dig pit latrines, a major throwback that has existed since the birth of this millennium.

However, this could soon be a thing of the past. Thomson Reuters foundation has started an organisation named 'Sanitation' that has taken up the hard task of controlling waste disposal.

This project is using solar energy to convert toilet waste into efficient cooking fuels.

The human waste is first treated and later, the treated wastes are combined with dried organic stuff such as corn husks and pressed into a solid. The dry bricks formed are called briquettes, and they can now be used as alternative fuel for firewood or charcoal.
