Acakoro Football Academy has been hitting the headlines in last few years, especially after its stellar performance in 2015 that saw them beat the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

The academy, which is situated on the outskirts of Nairobi saw off the two teams, to win the 2015 Donauauen Cup.

During the final, the Kenyan team beat Barcelona 1-0 in the finals, having seen off Borussia Dortmund in the process.

The youngsters managed to trounce Italian side Juventus and English side Fulham via penalties after scoreless results against the Italians and a 1-1 score against their English counterparts.

They also trounced Australian side Rapid Vienna and Fc Budapest from Hungary to make it to the finals where they faced off with Barcelona.

The team surprised many, considering it comes from a humble background with no much infrastructure to better their game.

The academy draws its players from the local area, many of whom come from single parent or HIV positive families that often live in poverty.

However, it still is one of Kenya’s best academies, where over 100 boys and girls train every afternoon.

Acakoro fosters a positive, team-spirited culture, and a holistic approach that ensures the students also develop academically.

The academy was set-up in 2013 as an NGO, providing students with full school tuition and meals.
