Residents of Kisumu city on Wednesday joined the rest of the country to mourn the death former First Lady Lucy Kibaki.
The locals said the death of Mama Lucy had robbed the country off a dedicated lady who was out to support the less privileged in society.
A second hand clothe dealer at Kisumu bus terminus Nelson Otieno said the contribution of the late Mama Lucy to the society cannot be underscored.
Otieno opines that Lucy was instrumental in equipping the Mama Lucy hospital in Nairobi.
“Look at Mama Lucy hospital, she struggled to ensure the hospital is up and running taking care of those who are unable in the society. The cost of medication in the hospital was affordable to many courtesy of Mama Lucy,” he said.
His sentiments were shared by a number of Kisumu residents some of whom said Mama Lucy has left a legacy that will be cherished for a long time in the country.
“Her contribution will remain with us. It is the mark she has left in this world. Her death tells us to be constructive in our thinking and deeds and be able to leave a lasting mark for the future generation,” said Janet Achieng, a grocery seller at Kibuye market.
An ODM party youth Chrispine Ouma said even though Lucy never set foot in Kisumu during the ten years rein of her husband Mwai Kibaki, locals’ habour no hatred for her.
Mr Ouma said Lucy was hard on then opposition led by Raila Odinga and that did not make the locals hate her determination to improve health care in the country.
