On Saturday May 12, three days after a dam burst in Solai and swept away nearby villages leading to loss of lives and destruction of property, the government held a press briefing.

The briefing was done by Rift Valley coordinator Mwongo Chimwongo, who had been appointed by the Interior CS as the official communication person to give updates on the incident.

Chimwongo told the nation that the government had ensured those reported missing had been accounted for.

“Everyone has been accounted for, apart from one individual who was said to be missing, but spotted within Nakuru town,” Chimwongo said.

This was however a lie. Victims had been lamenting over their missing kin and were irked by the government announcement.

Teresia Njeri was among those irked by the announcement made because by the time, her daughter was still missing.

“My daughter is still missing, I have even visited morgues, but she is nowhere,” said Njeri.

And on Monday, two days after the government announced everyone had been accounted for, a body of a child was recovered from the mud.

Why does the government always lie during a time of crisis?
