With the 2018 Commonwealth Games set to be held in April, the ministry is fighting to avoid such issues again.

In 2016, there was embezzlement of money meant for athletes at the event, which led to many athletes missing out on key amenities.

According to a report that was handed to President Uhuru Kenyatta, over Sh88 million was emblazed.

In another twist to the saga, police recovered bales of Nike kits from the Nairobi residence of a top athletics official.

The merchandise was recovered from the residence of National Olympic Committee-Kenya (NOCK) vice-chairman and Team Kenya deputy Chef-de-Mission for Rio 2016 Olympics, Ben Ekumbo.

The officer was later arrested and taken to DCI headquarters for questioning, an issue that raised a public uproar.

The saga led to the disbandment of NOCK on August 25, following public pressure and a directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta for the situation to be investigated.

"Some ministry officials misappropriated Sh88, 611,480 meant for air tickets while Nock has been misappropriating Nike contract funds and kit worth amounting to Sh126m per year meant for athletes since 2013," said the report.
