Criminology expert Evans Magendo says the media has a key role in the fight against terrorism, adding that we fail to fight the vice when we share videos and photos of those killed by terrorism acts.
“We are in war and casualties do happen, we are fighting but we should not give the enemy the advantage of publicizing them especially sharing photos and videos of victims,” he says.
“We should in fact minimize reporting on terrorist attacks. Some of the youth who are radicalized when they hear from the news that their ‘brothers’ have died fighting the enemy they also want to be heroes and martyrs leading to increased cases of terrorism,” he adds.
Magendo further notes that the media should take an active role in campaigning against radicalization and mistreatment by police.
“The media should reach out to the youth and preach peace and unity, champion for their rights especially in cases of police brutality which may lead to radicalization,” he adds.
