Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna has backed the proposal by Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i to reduce the number of security personnel allocated to VIPs.
Nguna said the proposal is timely stating that some VIPs are over-protected.
Addressing journalists at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi on Thursday, Nguna asked the CS to move with speed and implement the proposal.
He said it is ironic that some areas in the country are grappling with insecurity while some top government officials have excess security personnel.
“The Interior CS’s proposal is welcomed and we urge him to implement it without hesitation,” Nguna said.
Nguna asked Matiang’i to start with President Uhuru Kenyatta's security detail all the way down.
He said some government officers are over protecting when some Kenyans in the area prone to insecurity are suffering.
On Tuesday, Interior Ministry in a statement said that it is planning to reduce the number of security allocated to VIPs by 50 percent.
According to statistics from the Interior Ministry, at-least 12,000 police officers are attached to top government officials and government buildings across the country.
