At least thirty eight (38) people have been killed by floods as a result of the ongoing heavy downpour in Kitui County, Kenya Red Cross has revealed.

In a report released on Friday,  Red Cross said that majority victims drowned in swollen seasonal Rivers including the Enziu River.

Kitui County Red Cross coordinator Ms. Husina Lukowe said that the 38 includes the five who were swept by floods while trying to cross River Enziu three weeks ago.

 She revealed that Red Cross operation team is still searching for the body of a High school student who drowned in the River last weekend.

The official cautioned residents against crossing swollen rivers.

She said that information desks have been set for residents to report people who are missing and who they suspect could have been swept by floods.

The official's also asked well-wishers to help victims of floods who have been evacuated to safer grounds.

“We need humanitarian aid to help people that we have evacuated to safer grounds for their safety until when the rains will subside,” Lukowe said.

On Friday, area Governor Charity Ngilu said that her government has taken measures to ensure no more lives are lost as a result of floods.

Ngilu advised resident's living in areas marked as dangerous to move to safer grounds as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across the country.
